E-Sports, Real sport? Or Nah?
First off welcome to Flaming Hot Gaming, this is my first real post to this blog, so I hope you have time to critique and abuse me! I wanted to make a relatively controversial but very real Argument towards E-Sports.
Why isn’t E-Sports officially a sport? The definition of ‘Sport’ as found on Google goes as so;
- “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.”
Now I am going to break down the definition piece by piece and make it clear as to why I’m on E-Sports side of the argument. Right, I think I can say for everyone here that if you have ever played an RPG, FPS, MOBA or any other form of game where intense ‘Boss Battles’ or high stake ‘gunfight’ can occur, then I can guarantee that you have been nervous and even maybe broke a sweat. So lets all just agree that on at least one occasion, Gaming or Competitive Gaming, has made you “Physically Exert” stress or nerves.
“Skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”
Again to disprove any form of argument against gaming being a Sport, all we have to do is look towards some of the greatest Professional Gamers and Teams, whom play at the highest level of competition. Team Liquid and Evil Geniuses being two of the most notable teams, with a combined tournament winnings of just under $45 million. It’s safe to say that 99% of us have never even seen that kind of money, let alone be in a situation where a few games of ‘League of Legends’ could be the decider.
Fat and Greasy? That’s me!
One of the key stereotypes that I think everyone has heard in regards to gaming, is the ‘Fat and greasy, nerd with glasses’ sorta look. Now if I’m honest, this is kind of insulting. I get it i’m overweight, I don’t need to be bullied for being a gamer too!
The thing that I don’t understand is that anyone who done any form of research on the topic of E-Sports would realise that this is in fact wrong. I understand that there is that few that let us down… stop looking at me. But all in all we are a healthy bunch of people. I’ll use Doug ‘Censor’ Martin as an example. Now most of you probably recognise Doug from social media posts, as he recently ‘Broke up with the Worlds Hottest Weather girl to Play more Call of Duty’ , poor Doug can’t please anyone.
Now the main thing to note here is Doug’s killer arms! He is ripped. No doubt about it, he is at the peak of his physical ability. Yet he is one of the most dedicated and hardworking E-sports players in the world. E-Sports 1, Stereotyping 0.
The Greatest Fans in the World?
The Football (or Soccer if you are an American) World Cup, is arguably the biggest sporting event in the world however E-Sports is catching up. Now considering the world cup has been a recurring tournament every four years since 1930, and Dota 2 a, MOBA game, was released in 2013. The 2017 Dota 2 International Championship drew in roughly 5 million viewers. In comparison, the 2018 World cup final in Russia drew in 44.5 Million viewers world-wide. I understand that Football still holds higher viewership, however the tournament is also 88 years old. I feel that with E-Sports growing exponentially, its only a matter of time before viewership reaches new heights.
I fully understand that not everyone is going to agree with these opinions, however I feel that the few points I did make deserve to be taken seriously. E-Sports is one of the largest growing industries, It deserves more respect than it’s credited for. I could go on and on about this topic however I wanted to keep it short and sweet.
